Roaming through this barren landscape is a lone figure in a long black coat, a Man With No Name but K. The movie, which opens Friday, takes us back to the future, to a Los Angeles wasteland cloaked in a toxic shroud of smog three decades after the original took place, and to a ruined Las Vegas where flickering holograms of Sinatra and Elvis play for no one in a derelict casino. Just when you think America couldn’t get any darker, Blade Runner 2049 lands with eerie timing, especially considering it took 35 years for this massive sequel to materialize out of one of Hollywood’s most revered cult films. It’s a moving, masterful movie that demands a rewatch and will wow geeks and mainstream viewers alike – so much so we probably won’t have to wait 35 years for another one.Joi, played by Ana De Armas, and K, played by Ryan Gosling, in a scene from ‘Blade Runner 2049’. The first “Blade Runner” influenced a generation of filmmakers and films “2049” is the rare sequel that exceeds the original and honestly could be more important in the long run. As for their co-stars, Hoeks is freakily intense as a scene-stealing villainess, Ana de Armas has a nice multilayered turn as K’s girlfriend Joi, and there’s not nearly enough of Mackenzie Davis as the mysterious escort Mariette. K is Gosling’s most engrossing and powerful role to date, and Ford adds gravitas and a fitting sadness to the aging Deckard.

Villeneuve’s vision of this world is expansive and innovative while continuing Scott’s style-melding aesthetic: In one exquisitely rendered scene, a large neon hologram of a naked woman is contrasted with the familiar noir trope of a dude with a bandaged, bloodied face.īut the new “Blade Runner” amazes because every aspect is top notch: Hampton Fancher’s story is surprisingly emotional, Benjamin Wallfischand Han Zimmer’s pounding soundtrack is just as integral as Vangelis’ ethereal original score, and cinematographer Roger Deakins will get his first Oscar if there’s any justice. K has to come to grips with his childhood, finds he has an important role to play in the changing human/replicant relations, and seeks out Deckard, who is still haunted by the events of the original film. The result is a game of cat-and-mouse between K and Wallace’s right-hand woman, a ruthless Terminator-type replicant named Luv (Sylvia Hoeks). (At the risk of spoilers, let’s just say it is huge.) He and his boss (Robin Wright) agree to keep the discovery on the down-low – “This could break the world, K,” she tells him – though it doesn’t take long before replicant manufacturer Niander Wallace (Jared Leto), a rich industrialist who pretty much saved civilization some years prior, gets wind of it. K’s latest assignment involves confronting an outdated replicant (Dave Bautista in a small but memorable role), and while on the case he also uncovers a buried box that presents an impossibility in replicant science, something that could spark a war between replicants and mankind. Thirty years after Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) shut down four illegal replicants, Officer K ( Ryan Gosling) is tasked with “retiring” (aka destroying) older models while their upgraded brethren play various roles in society, many as slave labor.Įarlier: Five things you need to know about 'Blade Runner 2049'Īlso: Harrison Ford really loved Ryan Gosling's dancing in 'La La Land'

Super-stylish and deeply human – even with androids and holograms around – the spectacular follow-up takes the detective story of the first film and turns it into a grand mythology of identity, memory, creation and revolution.įlying cars, brilliantly lit metropolises and high-tech bioengineered beings known as replicants are still core to the series, as are the LAPD replicant hunters known as blade runners.

Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic “Blade Runner” popularized the cyberpunk movement (a gritty mix of neo-noir and hardcore sci-fi) back in the day, but “2049” perfects it. “Blade Runner 2049,” the best film so far this year, cements him as a bona fide icon of the genre. “Arrival,” easily the best film of 2016, seemed to be director Denis Villeneuve’s signature sci-fi project.
